My appreciation of music turned upside down

21 Apr , 2013 Blog,Food for Thought

This is actually a rather unique post in that it has nothing to do with business whatsoever. Rather, I have had a bit of a turning point in my relationship with music, so I thought I might share it in the hope it helps someone else.

I used to be a very keen musician (and still am, when I can stand to hear how rusty I have become) and have always appreciated songs in a variety of genres. My favourite aspect to music is listening to high skill levels and musicality, whether it is Eric Clapton’s guitar solos, massive tension built up before the drop in a club or some of Mozart’s arguably perfect melodies.

Until recently however, the lyrics of songs have totally passed me by! I have been so blinkered by judging music on musicality alone.

I do know many people do this anyway and that I probably a long way behind in only just realising this. However if you DO find yourself in the position I was in, please make a conscious effort to listen to the words! It will open your appreciation of music to a whole new dimension. Some lyrics are just as much works of art as the music accompanying them and has certainly changed the way I listen to music for ever.

I will leave you with the lyrics of one of the most musically simple songs ever written; however one that is speaks to me more and more each time I listen to it purely through the genius in the lyrics.

Imagine – by John Lennon

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, you may say
I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You, you may say
I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
