Frame your Personality and Skills
I would say 99% of you reading this will have some sort of social media aspect to your life. You will most likely be signed up for Facebook, a lot of you will be on Twitter, less of you will have set up a professional profile on LinkedIn and even fewer will be on Instagram and Pinterest.
As we have already established in a few of my previous posts, you have your own brand. Now, I want to take it a step further with you to imagining yourself AS a business, whatever your occupation is! You have an income (of some sort), you have expenses, most of you will be paying tax and probably paying or receiving interest… there… you are the same as a business.
We are good at offering some value and not so good at others and at some stage, we need to tell the world what we have offer by the way of your skills, and more importantly, the sort of person we are. Large corporations put up colossal billboards and shell out millions of pounds for adverts, colour schemes and slogans to do this.. It is important to remember is that our small businesses, the one between our own ears, already has its own billboard, video channel, professional profile, history of events, attitude etc..
I am going to focus on social media here, but it really applies to every single method of communication there is! I am going to try to help you figure out which social media channel is best suited to advertising you, and frame your personality and skill set in the best way possible to tell the world about what you can offer.
Each social channel has a different character, with different colours, different values and let’s face it a completely different language! We can share, re-tweet, re-pin etc, which are all ultimately the same thing. It is because of these varying values and brands of social media channel that enable us to both target the right demographic, and also put ourselves across to the world in exactly the way we want to be shown! Imagine the media channel as your ‘frame’ and your skills and personality as the picture within! Sounds odd.. but bear it in mind throughout this.. This channel could be a blog or website, a book, a Twitter profile, a Pinterest board, a publicity stunt etc..
To help figure this out, here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- Do I enjoy communication?
- Am I particularly self-conscious?
- Am I spontaneous?
- Am I creative?
- What is my dream occupation?
- How do I learn best, by reading, listening or doing?
- What do I look for in a friend or colleague?
- Who would I like to look up to me?
All of these are slightly broad but it gets you thinking more about your character.
Now think about the characters of all the media channels; Twitter requires concise, often unjustified sentiments and a lot of spontaneity, yet books require explanation and long-term planning. YouTube is obviously better for audio-visual and artistic creativity and Facebook puts everything in a Historic order. How does each one make you feel when you look at the home page? You will have a natural affinity to a few of them. If the channel you publish yourself on reflects you, then it is likely to attract people who you are going to have a more enjoyable and productive relationship with.
Here is a little example to help you out:
Alex is an artist; he loves producing abstract art, but doesn’t particularly enjoy telling people about it. He also would far rather communicate to his audience through his artwork and not by speaking or writing about it.
Here are a few things he should be thinking:
Twitter puts me on the spot, and I’m not particularly comfortable with words. Facebook shows all my work in a historic way with explanations to each picture I upload, but I am stuck with the blue colour scheme and rigid structure. Pinterest or Instagram could be good, but restrict other types of content..
I stand by using a whole range of social channels, because this way we can actually reach out and relating to a far more diverse group of people than sticking to the norm of Facebook and Twitter. The most important thing is however to think about what suits you or your business the best. So many businesses are restricting themselves by having a ‘one or the other’ attitude instead of really thinking about which ‘frames’ them in the best possible way and diversifying.
